New Flame Retardant and Water Clear Materials from Innovative Polymers

For the rapid production of thermoplastic-like prototypes and initial parts, Innovative Polymers has developed an optically clear, UV stable polyurethane that gels in less than 20 minutes and a high-performance polyurethane that meets UL 94 V-O standards and has a 90-second gel time.

OC-7086 water-clear, rigid polyurethane is formulated for hand- or vacuum-assisted casting.  The new product can be demolded after three to four hours at room temperature.  The cured system has an elongation of 8%, an acrylic-like flexural modulus of 350,000 psi, notched Izod impact strength of 0.5 ft. lbs./in., and heat deflection temperature of 129ºF (54ºC).  An elevated temperature post-cure increases the tensile strength from 8,000 psi to 10,500 psi and the heat deflection temperature to 203ºF (95ºC).

Flame retardant TP-4015 black polyurethane is designed for use with meter-mix dispensing equipment.  Demold time of the new polyurethane is 40 to 50 minutes at room temperature.  The cured system has an elongation of 18%, flexural modulus of 168,300 psi to simulate high-density polyethylene, notched Izod impact strength of 2.5 ft. lb./in. and heat deflection temperature of 230ºF (110ºC).  Tensile strength is 6,200 psi after an elevated temperature postcure and heat deflection temperature increases to 240ºF (116ºC).
